Why are there no well known brands on the site?
Sealy, Silentnight, Pocket Spring Bed Company, Rest Assured, and Layezee Beds.
Very good brands, years of experience in the manufacture of mattresses. Plenty of outlets selling these products with vast advertising material telling you how good and beneficial these mattresses are. But, what are you paying for?
Firstly, not many people know that ALL the above brands belong to one company – The Silentnight Group Ltd. Now. How many more mattress manufacturers can you mention? See here for others
Always Remember. There are well over a hundred UK mattress manufacturers out there. Some are very good, some are good and some are very bad. Most of these independent manufacturers, you will not have heard of.. but, it’s highly likely a good proportion of them manufacture mattresses for ALL High Street names. The label is changed of course which means you never get to see who these companies are even though you may actually love the product – you only see the sellers name taking the credit.
These independent manufacturers all have their own ‘Brands’ but usually have very little resource in promoting them so you rarely get to know who they are. Even so, buying a mattress purely based on a brand name is ludicrous.
Also, many (if not all) major manufacturers produce mattresses that are NOT FOR SALE ON/VIA THE INTERNET. These are supplied to shops only and the only plausible reason for this, is that it prevents you from doing any kind of online price or quality comparisons. You do not have to be a genius to realise that all mattresses are constructed in pretty much the same way no matter whose name is on the label. And surely, there can only be so many combinations of materials inside … so why do mattress prices differ so much?
Silentnight have over 170 different models – Sealy have well over 100 different models – and so on. There is simply no possible way that they can all be different EXCEPT for the fact that they have a different fabric, name and finish. Why?
The practice of offering hundreds of models with the same internal components is annoyingly pointless and confusing for the customer. My method just offers the absolute best of the bunch at the lowest prices. For example, I could quite easily offer hundreds of mattresses under £200 from many manufacturers leaving you to decide (gamble) which is the best one. I don’t work like this. I know my stuff and have personally selected the best ones within certain price ranges and it is only these that are offered on this site.
Keep in mind, Mattress manufacturers (in most cases) do not manufacture their own springs, or foam layers, or waddings, or fabrics and so on. These component parts are supplied from a number of specialist component manufacturers .. in different grades .. and then assembled on site in their thousands.
As a closing point, have you ever wondered why all national bed superstores predominantly stock the same well known brands when there are so many equally or better lesser known manufacturers to choose from? If I was a manufacturer of ‘Brand X’ I would ensure that these big retailers gave my products prominent sales positions by offering them all sorts of incentives for doing so. I’m not saying that this actually does happen though, but it does make me wonder.

Dear John and Ryan thank you so much for your reply, very helpful. As your website suggests it would have been fool hardy to purchase the mattress after reading the ‘science’ behind a quality product so thanks again for this site and for the information. I am interested in the origins-pocket-latex-1500-sks-ziplink, given the details previously mentioned would this be suitable for our weights and for the divan base?
Jane.
Hi Jane. Please give Ryan a call / text on 0787 292 8215. He knows exactly what questions to ask you and with your bodyweights being on the light side it may not be neccessary to go to the expense of the latex matts. John.
Hi Guys great site I found it whilst looking for a comparison to what looked like a bargain on the Sealy Simply Firm SK Mattress which is currently on offer 60% off no less at a leading supermarket. I have spent the last hour reading comments and info on your excellent site and now I am not sure if this mattress is what it suggests…a bargain. What do you think? If I purchased it it would be going on a divan base which we have had for nearly 13 years it is in good condition i.e. nothing sagging or broken i.e. drawers. I have been checking out your zip and linked superking mattresses as I remember the struggle to get the current mattress up the stairs and into our bedroom. I am llst my husband 12st so we are looking for a sag free mattress as we are both experiencing back and hip problems after a nights sleep. I am impressed with what I have read and would really like your views on the supposed bargain down from £698 to £279.20. I await your comments the sale ends 31/08. Thanks
Hi Jane. As you’ve read through the site you will know our views on Sealy and Silentnight et al. Firstly it is ludicrous to think that this is a bargain and moreover, if you think it is ‘worth’ anywhere near the £698.00 they say it WAS! then Sainbury’s are treating their customers like bloomin idiots.
Lets take this one step further: Our superking 1500 pocket spring latex mattress at just £32 more is what you should expect forr this amount of money (£730) – not some bag of springs with a content so dubious they are embarrassed to even give you a hint as to what it contains.
So Sainsbury’s are plying this pile of shit for just less than £300 for a Superking Size mattress. OK, it’s cheap – but that’s all it is. It is certainly no work of art and I can only hazzard a guess that the only care taken with this ‘mattress’ [ and I use that term loosely ] is to absolutely ensure you are aware that this mattress cannot be returned unless it is faulty. I feel sorry for the poor sods who have been taken in by this abhorrant deception with absolutely no recourse whatsoever.
Personally for your weights, I would think that The Simply Firm would be far too firm for both of you. If you are looking at this because of the price then unfortunately we have nothing in this price range. However, if your budget can be increased to a more realistic level I would suggest you consider our Origins Reflex 1000 See Here.
Thanks for your comment Jane. Sorry for the contempt so evident in my reply and if you do decide to go with that particular model, I would be grateful to hear your views. John and Ryan.
Hello
I wonder if you have any vi spring beds for sale in a clearance outlet or especially discounted, please? I was thinking of a zip and link superking, and ideally one mattress that is soft and the second medium.
Many thanks
Carmel McHenry
Hi Carmel, We do not stock Vi-Spring mattresses. What we offer are equivalents or similar to. Take a look at The Artisan Bespoke in our shop here and see for yourself how this compares to The Vi-Spring Lynmouth . John and Ryan.
