For people of size it will become apparant to you that there is relatively little – if any, choice or guidance on what mattresses will be suitable for your bodyweight. If you are 20 stone plus, you have to base you choice on the correct support and adequate comfort. In truth, there are not many mattresses that will give you both.
Over the past twelve months, a customer, and now friend, has been trialling the Laytec 8000 mattress which was chosen with particular care to his needs. Twelve months down the line his review follows. These will be his words and he has been asked to write honestly and openly about his experience with this particular mattress.
My name is Mike and I carry a label that says “morbidly obese”. My weight? – well lets just say it’s rather more than a “normal” bed likes to suffer. My wife and I have been married for 26 years and over the years have tried and tested many beds, most of them to their limits and beyond! It is approximately 3 years now since we discovered the joys of a superking bed whilst on holiday and we purchased our fist superking bed as soon as we arrived home.
We settled on a 6’ pillow topped mattress over a pair of spring edged zip and link divan bases by Sealy, which we were advised to be an excellent name in beds. The comfort was excellent to begin with. Sadly, it wasn’t to last. Within a very short space of time the mattress had a dip in one side that resembled a crater (no prizes as to who’s side). Sleep became more and more difficult because of the discomfort, and tempers began to fray. So, we set off to purchase a new mattress. As you may be able to imagine, being of a larger disposition comes with its own list of problems, not least of which is embarrassment. This was when I had my first encounter with John.
I trawled the internet until I found someone who would supply me with a pair of 3’ zip and link mattresses to fit the Sealy bases we had without taking my eyes out on cost. Not only was John able to do this, but he also delivered them to the door in person, which was amazing as we are considerably outside his delivery area. We bought a pair of Constance Orthopaedic single mattresses, and again these were fine for a short period of time. However, after only a few months my side had gone again and I was lying in a dip in complete discomfort. So, after 6 months I was back on his website to see if any changes or improvements had been made in the construction of mattresses. By this time I was resigned to the thoughts of spending the rest of our days on a cast iron base with a solid steel mattress! So, I made contact with John again.
The first point to emphasise is the need for open discussion. Whatever your problem I am certain John will be able to find a solution, but he needs to know the facts in order to do this. I know from personal experience how difficult it can be to talk sizes and weights with anyone. John is, however, very easy to talk to and doesn’t make judgements on you as a person. Once I did talk openly and honestly to him about my / our problem, to my complete amazement here was a man who didn’t mock and who didn’t ridicule – all he wanted to do was help. We did talk specific weights, which I have never done before with anyone, and his advice was the Laytec 8000 mattress.
We are now almost 12 months down the line since the traumas of merging mattress and frame and I have to say we still sleep like babes! It is the most amazing mattress for both holding its shape and for comfort. Every morning when the bed is made it is flat to look at. There are no areas where the quilt disappears into a crevice anymore! I get into bed at night onto a mattress that still looks and feels as if it has just been delivered that day. From the very weight of it you may be excused for thinking that it would be solid to lie on and yet it gives under the individual body weight so perfectly, and to date there is still no sign of us rolling together in the middle, a problem that we have always suffered from to a high degree. Our bodies are now properly supported from head to toe giving us both complete comfort and rest. I know this will sound so terribly clichéd to say but this mattress for us is proving so far to be perfect. It is firm enough to hold its shape yet soft enough to give under your weight. Truly amazing!
