Hi

I would like some advice please

My wife and I will be moving soon and will buy a new bed, we are not small people my wife is 18 st and I am 14. We have a 7 month old baby who occasionally shares our bed for this reason we would like a SK size bed but have been advised that getting a SK mattress into a lot of bedrooms can prove difficult and as we might move a few times in the next few years thought a Zip and Lock Mattress would solve this problem.

We want a solid wood sleigh bed, which at a guess will be slatted, we think that we like firm to medium springs but like the top layer to be soft and welcoming - any ideas???

Am desperate to find a single mattress that I can comfortably sleep on. I have a good firm-edged divan base which is only a year old but I have had three different mattresses in four years, all of them pocket sprung and well made, but 'firm' because I have always had 'firm' mattresses. However, I am now in my mid seventies, nine stone in weight (as I have always been) and am thinking that perhaps a softer, but still supportive mattress would suit better. I have tried many, including a John Lewis own brand and a Harrison (which, from your interesting website I find are one and the same). The Harrison 'Turquoise 4000' felt comfortable when I tried in in the shop. Any comments you may have would be much appreciated. By the way, I think your website is a revelation when it comes to mattress choice. If only we could have a close look inside a mattress before we part with our precious money!

You advised us to try the artisan naturals for a 4ft bed for my sister but you didnt advise as to the type of mattress, soft or medium. My sister is 5ft 5 in tall and weighs eleven and a half stone so would a medium mattress be ok. do you deliver to London. I am afraid we are on the top floor of a Victorian House!

Hi Pauline. Final details of the correct choice of mattress is completed by phone. Initally we would suggest a soft tension spring for this bodyweight - this particular mattress is well filled and so the overall tension would be medium. We would need to know your sister's preference and tailor the mattress to that. If you mail me your telephone number we will call you back. Alternatively, please give us a call and we can take it from there.

We do indeed deliver to London (No charge) via our couriers, and this will be to a room of choice. Access with a four foot mattress has not yet proved problematic. Hope this helps. John and Ryan.

Dear Sir, Whats your opinion of the Sealy 150cm matt pocket latex 2000.

Hi Charles. You will notice throughout this site that we are never disengenuous towards another manufacturer or retailer. What we try to do is steer you towards the questions you should be asking in order to come to an informed and educated decision by yourself.

For example, if we take The Sealy Pocket Latex 2000 as a mattress for your consideration you will need to know - What you are buying. The official description is as follows;
Featuring a layer of super responsive latex this bed is big on comfort. With special air vents and micro quilted mattress, it keeps you at the optimum sleep temperature too.

A medium firmness bed with special rebound technology, the Pocket Latex 2000 has a layer of Innergetic Latex, which gives ‘push back’ support and aiding optimal spinal alignment during sleep. Also helping you sleep well are two layers specially designed spring systems. The renowned Sealy Posturetech 660 distributes weight away from the heaviest part of the body and another layer of up to 1360 individually nested pocket springs that react independently to offer optimum support.

This bed doesn’t just keep you comfy, with its specially designed air vents and plush micro-fibre mattress cover, it keeps you at the right sleep temperature all night long.

Reading between the lines you will see that it is a one sided mattress consisting of two layers of springs and a layer of latex. That's it. And that's all you need to either keep it on your list for further consideration or disgard it.

What you need to do now is find something similar to compare it to. For this example, I would ask you to consider our Origins 1500 or 2000 (obviously which one will depend on your bodyweight) This has 6cm of talalay latex and 2cm of Reflex foam on top of the pocket springs.

How much latex is used in The Sealy Pocket Latex 2000?
This is where you will come a cropper because Sealy do not tell you this most crucial piece of information. When you come across stumbling blocks like this you really do have to phone Sealy Customer Services [016973 20342] and ask them for the relevant detail - What is the depth of latex used in the Sealy Pocket latex 2000? and just to satisfy my curiosity - What on earth are 'Specially designed Air Vents? Hope this helps and please let us know how you get on. John and Ryan.

Hi, Iv'e got a question, I have ordered a Salus 'Memory pocket 2000' mattress, this was ordered from a local retailer, when we looked at it in the showroom It had on the label 70/75mm memory foam top with vertical ventilation and pocket springs.
What arrived today was not what we ordered, this one was marked as a 'Latex memory pocket 2000' and the label description was 2.5cm latex, 5cm memory and encapsulated pocket springs. I didn't notice until delivery men had left. My question. Am I better off keeping this or accepting the replacement that has been offered (the originol ) I have searched for more information about this style of mattress but can find no answers, do you guys have the answer to this?
Sorry you won't/didn't get the sale but this Latex/memory combined thing appears to be new! So your opinion on this could be invaluable to others.
Many thanks Peter
Hi Peter. I would keep it. The combined depth of primary layer(s) are the same but the quality of the 2.5cm latex (Graphite Latex I believe) is fundamentally better than equivalent 2.5cm of memory Foam. The two models are structurally identical (bar fabric) except for the sleep surface. John and Ryan.

Thanks for the response. The Enchantment is indeed latex, the specs are exactly the same between the two models. And they are pocket springs as I've seen in my description and it's part of the 'Platinum Pocket Collection'.

As I can get this for £665 online I just wondered how it compared with your offering and generally what you know of Sealy as a company and their quality.
Thanks.

Hi again Jon. As you have probably read throughout this site, unless you are looking at premium manufacturers such as Savoir Beds, Marshall and Stewart, Hastens, Vi-Spring etc, it is practically pointless even to consider buying a mattress based on brand alone. You should be comparing like for like on component quantity, quality, build and detailing. The industry has radically changed beyond recognition over the past ten years or so. Many manufacturers that were deemed 'premium' back then have now been sold on, and on again and the majority are under the ownership of investment companies who only look at the bottom line and (I believe) the passion that the original owners had has all but gone.

Sealy is an American company, their products are manufactured under licence in this country by The Silentnight Group (also taken over by an investment company earlier in 2011) whether the products sold in this country are the same as American models is unlikely.

Our offering is openly detailed in order that you use this to compare to similar models. Until mattress 'ingredients' are listed openly and honestly by all manufacturers [and this will have to be done through legislation] you and countless others will be navigating this mattress minefield at the mercy of some rather unscrupulous manufacturers and retailers.

Dont be embaressed about asking pertinent questions. Ask what type of latex it is they are using. how much natural latex is used (the expensive bit) and how much synthetic. How deep is it, Is it better (for your needs) than natural Fibres? and so on and on.

Please keep asking your questions. Even though my responses are simplistic, they do form the basis of how you should be shopping for your product. I do not want any of our readers to just take our word for anything at face value, you and others should be using what we say to question other retailers and manufacturers about 'their' products. We believe the products we have on our site are well built and well priced - use these as starter indications and see if you can find better. If not, then come back to us.
Where can I buy on old fashioned spring base bed, like they had in the 1960s?

Hi Layne. Good question. When Ryan and I were doing our own deliveries we used to come across these bedframes more often than you would think. We used to ooh and aaah at the construction methods and enviable quality compared to todays offerings, much to the bewilderment of our customer.

My dads old fashioned sprung frame was still in use till the day he passed away. Completely and utterly worn out after us three kids used it as a trampoline but there was no way he was going to change it.

In answer to your question I don't know. Regular popping into Ebay might throw up a little gem but I would be prepared to accept that the springs may well be past their usefulness. They will of course require a good oiling (they were horrendously, and at times, embarrassingly squeaky). There are some amazing headboards and footboards on these kind of frames and even if the springs are trashed they can be altered to provide a surround (Lit Bateau stylee ) or having solid slats added. Please let us know how you get on and good luck. John and Ryan.

Hi guys,
Interesting site. I'm looking at a Sealy Katerina 2200 mattress online, assuming it's the same as the 'Enchantment 2200' seen in Paul Simon stores. How do you guys rate this mattress? It's 2200 pocket springs with a thick layer of latex on top, apparently very well spec'd.

I've seen some fairly negative reviews on Sealy mattresses but all from American customers, and none on this particular mattress. The marketing I see and hear on Sealy though is fantastic! I've tried it out in store several times and it feels lovely to lay on. Apparently a £2000 RRP, down to £800 instore and about £665 cheapest online.
How does it compare with your pocket sprung/latex combo mattresses?
Thanks.

Hi Jon. The Enchantment [I believe] is memory Foam and The Katerina is latex. So in answer to your question they are certainly not the same. Assuming you are looking at The Katerina, I would question how 'thick' the thick layer of Innergetic latex foam actually is.

As for the springs? The detail states 'It has a standard layer of 1200 weight responsive zoned springs, along with a mini layer of 1000 pocketed springs on the top' Are the 1200 weight responsive springs Pocket Springs or another name for continuous coil springs? From what I see, a one sided mattress with a depth of 36cm consisting of springs and latex of dubious quantity would promt me to ask a few more pertinent questions. Finally, the question just begging to be asked is where on earth a RRP of £2000 comes from?

Our Origins Latex models are fully detailed. If manufacturers are not telling you what's inside their products then all you have to do is ask them. How you can consider making a substantial purchase based on 'fantastic marketing' without questioning the retailers to within an inch of their life really is beyond me. You are not expected to know what 'weight Responsive Zoned Springs' are. I dont know what they are. I would ask them for a full detailed description of the pros and cons in order to make an informed comparison to see whether they are substantially better than any other form of spring support. But because of the lack of adequate explanation, you are in a very poor bargaining position. Hope this helps. John and Ryan.

Hi,

I'm considering an Artisan Natural mattress with soft springs for my daughter who weighs around 55kg.
My question is what is the matching divan base like? How is it constructed? The cost is only around half that of a sprung edge base from John Lewis and perhaps a third of that of a Vi Spring base, so I'm wondering exactly what's provided for that money.
Thanks in advance

Hi Adrian. The bases we have made for our Artisan models are based on the Harrison's True Edge base. Obviously they are not identicle because that would be copying... and we don't do that However, they are sprung edged as standard with 1000 pocket springs (KS) they are completely upholstered sides and surface. Our prices, as you so rightly point out are low in comparison but does that mean Harrisons, Vi Spring et al could be overpriced? Hope this helps. John and Ryan.

Many thanks for that. Sadly , despite the quality of your matresses, I'm so stocked up with rather costly bed linen that is designed for 10" thick matresses that I've got to stick to that thickness. However, you and your site have been very helpful and I'll definitely be going for decent pocket springing etc etc. (not the cheapies I was looking at incidentally).

Hi again Keith. Glad to be of help. As a further little sidenote, bear in mind that pocket springs have a general height of 6". In order to get a 10" mattress means that there will only be 2" of upholstery either side. If you are looking at a one sided mattress then don't assume that there will be four inches of upholstery on the sleeping side .... !
The two important questions you should know at the very least is the height of the springs (they could be bigger than 6") and the depth of the upholstery assuming that this will not be on any specification. Let me know what yougo for and feel free to post any further questions. John and Ryan.

Hi Terry. Thank you so much for your kind words. To make life a little easier just go and bite the bullet and get the Artisan Naturals. It falls within your budget and can be customised to take into account your wifes extremely low bodyweight and your musculkar frame. We would need to talk through your requirements to ensure we can do everything posible to accommodate your back troubles. FYI - The Artisan has an approx three week lead time from order to delivery. John and Ryan.

John and Ryan thanks for replying.
The bed I brought is a leather and has a wooden bar straight through the middle of the bed and the slats individually fit into plastic sheath's which pop into place along the sides and middle bar, I had to nail the slats to the sides of the bed throught the sheaths because every time we moved or sat on the bed one side of the slats (two or three at a time) would pop out its sheath and onto the floor hence nailing them and now its beginning to happen in the middle, the mattress itself is a pocket sprung with memory foam. I have been advised to buy a second mattress as to take pressure off the slats personally I think the mattress has pushed the sides of bed out because it cannot take the pressure could my thinking be right or would a second mattress be the answer?
Thanks Lee

Hi again Lee. I'm sorry but we are really at a loss. The plastic sheaths should have two lugs that sit in appropriately sized holes on the side of your frame. If they are popping out it could be that there was a manufacturing fault with the 'holes' being too big for the lugs to sit tightly.

If the plastic sheaths stay in place and the slats are dropping out then the only reason we can think of is that you may have slats for a double bed and not a king size. If you are unable to have a replacement set sent out to you from the retailer then consider replacing them with solid slats that stretch across the entire frame from side to side (a good timber merchant will cut these to size and shouldn't cost that much).

I'm not convinced of the second mattress theory. A bed frame should be capable of supporting a mattress. If it dosn't - and it obviously isn't - then it's not doing the job it is supposed to. Let us know what the outcome is. I really would contact the retailer and explain the situation. John and Ryan.

I 've found I need a new mattress and have looked around locally. Two that have been suggested, and that seem ok are (I believe) from a company called "Shakespeare", on being called Leonado and the other Picasso. I have never heard of either of them but have found a number of outlets selling these on line. They are pocket spring, non turn-over and seem to be padded with either wool or polyester. Do you know anything about these? They do seem a bit cheap costwise.

Hi Keith. Why would you want to know about the manufacturer? There are more than over a hundred or so different manufacturers out there - some good, some not so good. I don't think you have the time to investigate every single one in order to find out who is good at what they do. What you should be doing is seeing what mattress has the best fillings and components for the money you are willing to pay. It's as easy as that.

The Leonardo for example is similar to our Origiins Reflex 1000. There are differences, insomuch as ours is a full double sided mattress, and as we detail all our fillings it is up to you to decide who is offering more mattress for your money. Hope this helps and feel free to call if you require any further info. John and Ryan.

I literally got a vi-spring Apsley firm delivered yesterday. It's on a cheap Ikea slatted base.

Before I was sleeping on a cheap, open sprung £180 mattress for 3 years. I've always had a terrible back that needs massaging nightly and a microwave wheat bag placed on. I tested the firm and medium and by the advice the salesman gave me bought the firm. I woke up in the middle of the night with my lower back in agony! To sleep again I had to heat up the micro bag. I expected a great nights sleep after spending almost £2000! Is there anything I can do? I don't have much money after all that on a mattress. Thank you for any help!

Hi Diana. I really do you think you should give your new mattress a bit more of a chance. It is generally understood that it does take a little time for your body to adjust to a new mattress [new shoes syndrome]. I have had a look at The Apsley spec and there is nothing there that I can point to as being the culprit for your discomfort. I am assuming your bodyweight is not overly above average, and the fact that the salesman recommended a firm would indicate he took this into consideration.
If you are finding this mattress to be on the firm side [you think a medium or soft would have been more comfortable] then consider the use of a feather and down topper to take the edge off the firmness level whilst the mattress breaks in slowly and naturally. A good initial test is to place your duvet under the bottom sheet and see if that helps. Please let us know how this progresses a sit will help many other people with the same problem. John and Ryan.

Hi
I brought a wooden slatted bed and pocket sprung mattress the problem I have is that the slats fall out of their plastic covers and on to the floor, my uncle who used to work for a bed retailer told me I need a second mattress under the pocket sprung one to support and distribute the weight evenly if this is correct what kind of mattress should be best for the bottom?

Hi Lee. I'm not particularly sure what's happening here. Are these two separate questions? Are your slats fitted correctly. As for a second mattress underneath your mattress - I've never heard of that before. Sorry but a bit more info is required. John and Ryan.

As for a second mattress underneath your mattress – I’ve never heard of that before. Sorry but a bit more info is required. John and Ryan.
