It is a long time since I experienced such good customer service. The mattress (l'amour pocket sprung 1000 kingsize) is great and the price was great but it is the service that is exceptional. Many thanks John

Just had a Affinity zip link super mattress and divan base delivered. Very happy with the mattress, its as good as a much more expensive one its a whole different class from my old one.
So glad I found this website, the guides are brilliant and John is fantastic! He really knows his stuff and it was a pleasure to deal with him. I'm happy to echo all the happy customers above and I'd recommend you to everyone.
We live in London so were a bit doubtful about delivery but John arranged everything very well and the courier co was also excellent so kudos for taking your responsibility so seriously. Thats called memorably good customer service.

I had a Limoges Pocket 1500 Double Mattress (medium-firm and very comfortable) delivered in person by John at the weekend, and I really cannot fault either the item or the service. There's nothing that gives you more confidence in buying a product over the net that's very personal and subjective (like something you're going to sleep on every night for the next many years), than being given straight-forward and honest advice over the phone and email as a potential customer. And then it was topped off with an incredible delivery and unpacking service. Many thanks to you, John. I wish you a great sleep at night knowing that your customers do :)

I had the same Kingsize Affinity Pocket Spring 2000 mattress delivered by John yesterday, and can testify to its solid construction and weight. I chose it for its pocket springing and the natural material for its top layer. John's website taught me a lot about mattresses and I knew exactly what I was buying from him rather than the lack of information about most beds on sale. It's a quality bed at a knockdown price. It was refreshing to have the personal service and knowledgeable help from someone who clearly knows so much about and loves beds.

Review of the Kingsize Affinity Pocket 2000 Mattress.

Firstly, the service from John is excellent, - if you decide to buy a bed you’ll probably meet in person, in fact, as he delivers the mattress straight to your bedroom! After having looked at the internet in general at a number of mattresses what impressed me most was the honesty of John’s approach. There really are those special offers of was £1300, now £500 (and I saw it on some of the mattresses John sells, and he sells it cheaper!). But with this company, you get a good overview of how mattresses are made, what to expect and what you are actually paying for. I’m confident to say that you get a quality mattress at an excellent price, in fact the cheapest price I could find.

So, the mattress itself. We ordered a Kingsize Affinity Pocket 2000 with an additional Reflex layer to give it extra substance and to provide a durable bridge between the spring unit and the top layers. The first thing you notice is the quality and weight of the mattress – this isn’t going to bend around doors (so do make sure there’s a clear, straight run to the room you will be using it in). The Belgian Damask jacquard fabric is excellent and there are the nice touches of hand tufted woolen felts. (It’s scary to say but I now know what they are.) You feel like you have a bargain, even before you’ve laid down on the thing. The mattress, itself, is medium to firm, and we have been using it for a couple of months now. We’ve found it to be very comfortable, and believe that we have a mattress that will last.

My wife and I did look at a number of mattresses, including some of the high-end Vi-Sprung mattress, which retail in the £1000s. There is a difference, perhaps not that great, actually, but as John states, he’s not competing in that market. The bottom line, in my opinion is this: if you want an excellent mattress at an excellent price, to include great service (I mean if you don’t like it you can return within 14 days, and you don’t have to worry about collection!) I would wholeheartedly recommend John and Factory Beds Direct.

Cheers, John!

Dear John,

I have found your site immensely helpful and informative but have a couple of questions:
I have had a superking pocket sprung mattress for 20 years ( I know, scandalous for not having changed it earlier!!) but have loved it as it has given great support and does not ever get hot like some mattresses I have slept on. However it now needs replacing and due to space requirements in new house I have decided to go for a zip and link option. I found the comments advice regarding the JL mattress helpful but wonder if you could give advice on the ‘heat’ properties of the Affinity as I note that the contents are primarily synthetic and foam is used.
Hi Sarah. All mattresses in this price range and a large percentage above this price range will contain a fair element of polyester as the primary wadding component. To enhance this layer further, additional wadding components are often added such as wool, cotton, memory foam, latex and so on and therefore the price increases. It really is not posible to find a mattress below £800 which uses 100% natural fibres.
The foam in the Affinity is used as a bridging layer above the insulator pad to prevent the polyester above compressing prematurely. Read more ..
There will be no undue heat element in this mattress as the foam layer is beneath the polyester and the wool layer. Hope this helps. John.

Hello John,

I purchased a Sleepeezee 6'0" (180cm x 200cm) Backcare Ultimate 2000 Mattress, Firm Comfort afew months ago from a large internet based mattress company. Almost instantly it developed a 3cm dip through the middle.
As I have a bad back I have been unable to sleep on it. FIRA came out, inspected the mattress and said it was due to normal settlement.
They basically said tough.
Have you heard of such a mattress sinking so much after such a short timeframe?
Do you know who I can complain to to get my money back? Thanks, Brett.
Hi Brett. My reply on this is obviously based purely on speculation and can only be read as such.
Firstly, the only way to possibly find out why this has happened is to open the mattress up and see what the cause is. Unfortunately, where this leaves your consumer rights is certainly not something that I would even guess at.
My first inkling would be that the mattress may have been bent to get it up your stairs and the fabric containing the springs have torn and separated. Not many stairwells can take a mattress of this size with ease and if it was ‘forced to fold’ to get it past the overhang then that could be the source of your problem. Secondly, I would look at the underside of the mattress – can you identify anything from this. I am assuming this is a one sided mattress. Have the potentially loose springs penetrated the underside? Finally, what fillings are used in this mattress? I’m guessing that you have no idea and sadly neither do I, this last question is probably the decider as to where the onus lies.
Why did you buy a mattress without knowing what was inside? And whose fault is it now you have a complaint? Let me know how this pans out. John.

Dear John
Thank you for you reply. The mattressess will be for bunk beds so hopefully they won’t be able to jump on them too much !.

Hi Zoe. I see now why your request was for 8" deep matts. Many people do not realise that many bunk beds - particularly metal ones have a guard rail quite insufficient in height to accomodate a 'standard size - ACCEPTABLE pocket sprung mattress. The free things offered with some bunks are nothing more than a bag of springs described as a mattress. When purchasing mattress for bunks ensure you are satisfied that the mattress depth does not compromise the safety rail of the top bunk in particular.

I have about £120 to spend on each mattress ( I don’t know if this is enough)and would prefer pocket sprung but I am really confused after looking for weeks .Unfotunately this is not enough to expect a huge choice of pocket sprung mattresses, but the ones available will be worth your £120. The single mattress I recommend for this budget is The Pocket 800 from Restus/Kozeesleep. But bear in mind - this is not a reccomendation for your situation as the height is 20cm which may be too high for your model of bed. For less than £120 the spring system will be cage sprung and unlikely to be pocket sprungs .

I saw your post on moneysavingexpertcom and you seem to talk a lot more sense . One mattress will be for a (light weight) 9yr old and the other for a 7yr old. If you can get hold of single mattresses I would be happier buying from you.
So would I, and the best I can currently offer you at that price would be the one mentioned above for £110 each delivered. I wouldn't be happy with the standard of the mattress supplied for me to retail at much less than this but I'm always looking.

I also need 2 cotbed mattresses and a cot mattress if you can get hold of any (not foam)
There are specific regulations about mattresses for cots/ babies and my product knowledge in this area is weak so sorry, unable to assist. John.

Hi John,

I had a look at your website and wondering if you can help me. My partner and I are having trouble finding a mattress that suits both of us. I would like pocket sprung with memory foam top and he likes some thing much firmer. We have a Super King bed frame is it possible to have get a mattress that is half and half? Kate.
Hi Kate. Memory foam mattresses are notoriously hard to ziplink as the fabric used in many cases is a stretch soft knit rather than damask as found on firmer mattresses. With this in mind, your situation requires an added layer of difficulty by asking for two completely different kinds of mattress but at the same level to fit your frame. This request is fraught with complication and unlikely one that many manufacturers would be happy to carry out at an acceptable price. A posible solution would be two separate single mattresses (but special size 6'6 long) joined together by use of good quality protector. This is where bespoke manufacturers come into their own and more specialised than most in being able to help in situations like these. Try contacting Burgess Beds directly and ask them for a suggestion. Please keep me updated with your progress as this is a much asked request. John.

A posible solution would be two separate single mattresses (but special size 6′6 long) joined together by use of good quality protector. This is where bespoke manufacturers come into their own and more specialised than most in being able to help in situations like these. Try contacting Burgess Beds directly and ask them for a suggestion. Please keep me updated with your progress as this is a much asked request. John.

i have a metal bed frame which has rungs rather than flat slats running across it- will these damage my mattress, i have had an airsprung mattress for 2 years and it is like there's no wadding left protecting you from lumpy mattress springs. is this because it is not great quality or is my bedframe solely to blame- and how to i get round it? i'm looking for a new mattress (obviously) and am wondering whether to put something between the mattress and frame to prevent it getting lumpy?
thanks, claire
Hi Claire, I have no 'positive proof' that this method of support will damage a mattress. I do not know of any test carried out that can answer this with factual evidence so any answer can only be opinion. The retailer of this kind of bedframe will obviously say it wouldn't damage a mattress. The retailer of memory foam mattresses for example, may say yes it would. I personally would suggest that a better frame for your new mattress would be more beneficial.
The answer to your second point about your Airsprung mattress is speculation as you do not provide model name and specification. However, Airsprung as a product brand is not one that I would readily associate with top quality and so, just on that basis alone I think the model you describe has come to the end of its life. Let me know what your budget is and I will be able to help you further. John.

I have been shopping for a new mattress recently, and today found a fantastic one!!! It's from a company called ****** Beds (I think the parent company is **********)

The model I ordered was called the *****....It is fantastic...Not too firm nor too soft...With 2000 pocket springs and memory foam, with an Outlast cover...Cant wait to get it delivered!!

All the best, Colin
Hi Colin. Nice find. A lovely looking 2000 pocket sprung mattress with memory foam, premium fabric cover. Let me know the purchase price so I can give a true assesment of all the pros and cons and remove the edits without being sued. I would be happy to forward all enquiries made through this site to the company concerned. If overpriced? I will be able to give the reasons why. If a bargain - I want to sell it
Please let me know the outcome. John.

Hi
We have just been to a shed that sells beds (if you catch my drift)
We have fallen for a Salus mattress. Pocket sprung (1500) with a memory foam top. The sides were supported with reflex foam(?) The size we are looking for is a double.
We live in Stoke-on-Trent Junc 16 off the M6.
Hope you can help? jackie
Hi Jackie. I have just responded to a similar question and requested that the price and specification can be supplied for comparison. As a general point of note for all readers, try not to get too attached to a brand name but try to break down the mattress by component. In this case, The Salus 1500 Memory is fundamentally a 1500 pocket sprung unit with a memory foam comfort layer. The detailing, fabric and finish on all Salus mattresses are admittedly high end and so the compromise on any alternative or comparable models will have to be taken into account.
As I have mentioned previously the price asked for these mattresses are in the main rather high for a standard combination of pocket springs and memory foam but - the quality of finish is superb. John.

hi
i am looking for a 2ft 6 x6ft x 8" deep mattress( hardboard base) for adult to use in a caravan any ideas what to look for.
Hi Dee. The depth of 8" is low for a decent quality mattress with sprung interior. 10" would be a standard. And so, as alternatives without sacrificing on comfort you should be considering latex or memory foam mattresses - perfectly adequate for caravan usage . The size of 2.6 x 6.6 falls outside standard sizes and once again a foam mattress will be easier to source without paying a premium for special size. John.

Please could you let me know if you have any single mattresses. I am looking for two really good quality as I have five children and would like them to last !!
Many thanks. Zoe
Hi Zoe. When choosing mattresses for longevity you will have to decide on a series of compromises each coupled with a set of pros and cons. For example, pocket springs are superior but can be easily damaged if kids use it as a trampoline. Therefore, a foam construction would be more suitable, but could not be considered as 'good' quality - but suitable for purpose. I am preparing an article on the lifespan of mattresses that will address many points on this subject and the conclusion will show that despite many claims of guarantees and warranties of a significant period there will be very few (if any!) that can be valid. The bottom line will be that only certain components of the mattress will be guaranteed for a time period such as a foam layer or spring system but the mattress as a whole will not. Confused? Most certainly. The terms of a five year or ten year warranty will undoubtedly carry clauses which makes a warranty completely and utterly useless.
Decide on how much you want to spend on each mattress and keep in mind how they will be used - seating and sleeping / maintained / growing weights / and then find out what components will be best at addressing these needs. John.

Hi
I have inherited an antique bed frame which functions as 2 singles but also as a double when put together, which is how I'd like to set it up. I need to buy a mattress for it. However, the centre has 2 wooden panels which would separate off a zip and link mattress on the bottom side of the mattress, probably by around 5-6cm. I wonder whether it is ok to just zip the top section of the mattress, which presumably would be well above the height of the wooden middle section and then put a mattress topper on. You seem very knoweldgeable on the subject, so I wondered whether you might have any ideas or thoughts on what would be best to do.
Many thanks.
Hi Sam. I would personally consider bridging the bottom of the base (with chip foam / foam or something that would offer some kind of suspension) enabling the mattress to sit on a level rather than levelling the sleep surface. I would love to see a pic of the actual bed. John.

Hi,
My wife has got us looking at a new bed with 2 matresses e.g ziplink. Your site is very helpfull and informative. There's a lot in there, but it's relatively easy to find. No silly animated title pages, good job. I know feedback on a site is useful. I shall save this as a favourite and let her read it all up. Cheers Derek.
Hi Derek, thanks for the comments. Please let me know if there is any part that needs clarifying. Because of space I have only put the essential information, and if you think that there is a detail that needs elaborating upon, then please let me know. John.

i bought a divan 2 years ago and the supposed board has completely collapsed in on my side and my husbands and the 1 softwood slat inteded to hold my sleeping body weight has collapsed too. really am not supprised when considering it was only held on by balance on a 1 cm frame. i paid 225 which was the most i could afford for a bed that i was told was good quality . it has aggrivated my bad pelvis and i am in pain everyday. now i have orderd a lovely faux leather bedstead with memory foam mattress so am hoping to have better luck this time round. but i agree divans suck and people shouldnt let those sales men in the shop talk you into buying one. do you know what if anything i can do about the divan if the bed falling apart like this is coverd in the terms when you purchase it
Hi Sarah. What more can I say? I would guess that the base you had is 'worth' no more than £65 (assuming it is non storage) and it has just simply reached the end of its life.
Despite what the salesman told you does not alter the fact that most mass produced divan bases are manufactured to be sold as cheaply as posible - very few exceptions. They are not built to last and as you have found out - they just simply dont. So whose fault is it?
Would you have bought the bed if you had read the article above before buying your bed? Would you be so annoyed if you knew that all you paid for the base was £65? This means that your mattress was sold to you for about £160. How long did this last? Lets say 2 years. I reckon if you cut the mattress open all you will find is a cage sprung unit - doubt if it will even be 13g. One sided, Topped with an insulator and just a thin layer of polyester. I would say for that quality of mattress and base, a life of two years is about maximum you could reasonably expect to have had. Your complaint should be why did the salesman tell you it was 'good quality'? What is his definition of 'bad quality'? Knowing that, would have given you an indication of the value of trust you could have put on his recommendation.
PS. Why didn't you buy your new bed and matt from me? John.
PS. Really sorry you were let down but I'm sure a lot of people will be grateful for your comments and what to expect.
