The bottom line is spend as much as you can afford. It’s the same line that is trounced up and down every bed shop in the country making you think that to get even better you have to spend more … and spend even more for better still. There will always be a more expensive model available, in fact it culminates at £52.000. Your dilemma is, where between £99 and £52.000 do you set your budget? £99 will get you a cheap mattress. How much more do you want to spend to get better?
My answer would be - “spend as much as you can – to get what you want”. The tricky part is; Do you actually know what you want?
For some, it can be an easy choice. For everyone else it is more difficult to actually pinpoint what you need. Your partner fidgets, differing weights, rolling together, back problems, heat problems, neck problems, problems, and every single problem absolutely individual to you. Is the mattress you need actually out there?
Maybe<br>. Bear in mind that there are well over 2000 differing mattress models out there. How do you go about finding the one that suits your needs as well as suiting your budget? The simple answer is you can’t. It is not physically posible. I’m five years down the line and still looking. So, if during your subsequent searches you come across something that would (ahem) interest me then please mail me.
My product list is entirely open and for all to see.
I would say that for a budget around the £300 mark you will be able to get a decent mattress that should suit pretty much everyone . it will be pocket sprung and have decent waddings. It won’t last forever, or anywhere near ten mystical years with kids bouncing on it, but you will certainly be getting your moneys worth.
To go further than £500 or so on a mattress needs serious research and thought. This is the price range where not many other components can be added without carrying a genuinely hefty retail price. Consider this. The finest Cashmere costs around £8000 kilo. How far down the Cashmere Quality chain do you think the mattress is that contains this product in any great quantity?
Summary. There is a claim that the more you spend on a mattress the better it will be. This is true when you are talking about premier league manufacturers. Mass produced mattresses are not in the premier league. Please comment if you will.

I am drawn to the Highgrove 5 ft Affinity bed/mattress 2000 but have also tried the same Highgrove bed but called Climasmart 2000 50 ml Visco Elastic memory foam. Do you stock the latter and what is your opinion of it ? Iit seems to have the edge for comfort over the Affinity which I must admit is also very comfy. Also how would you say these compare with the Eternity incorporating latex but doesn’t have the hand wool tufting which for me seems to be a touch of luxury in the first two.
What a brilliant question. This is the dilemma you, and many others like you will face once you do all the preliminary research and obviously, you really have. You have identified;
three completely different models with three completely different sleep surfaces. But all retailing at more or less the same price which fits your budget. So how do you make your choice?
Firstly, you ask why I don’t stock The Climasmart 2000 even though it’s manufactured by [Highgrove] the same company as the other two. When I choose what matts go on this site I have the same dilemma as the one you and many others are having now Which one is the best value for money mattress?
My choice was between the Climasmart Memory 2000 and the Eternity Latex 1500. They both would have retailed for a similar price and so I made my choice by deciding which one was more superior purely based on quality and price – (Eternity) 500 PS less but has a 2″ latex top layer? Good quality ticking / Finish similar. or (Climasmart) 500 PS more but 2″ Memory Foam top layer Good quality ticking / Finish similar.
I believe that latex (blend and natural) is a far more superior component than Memory Foam and so I chose The Eternity to put on the site and therefore not Climasmart. The pocket spring count difference [in this case] was a very small compromise.
That leaves you with a choice of The Affinity 2000 and The Eternity Latex? Now it’s up to you to go through the same process to decide which of these two left will suit your needs best and please reply with how you came to your decision.
By the way, I shall be converting this post into an article and therefore would appreciate any feedback (email or open post here) from anyone on the contents of my reply. John
Hi John,
I would like to purchase a single bed which has one full size single bed underneath it, which can then make a superking size bed side by side at the same height.
The beds will be used separately as two singles by young children (aged 3 and up) and also as a superking by two adults. I would imagine that they would each be used only occasionally (say, once or twice a month, if that).
What would you recommend please? I have seen so many, ranging from £400 to £800.
Many thanks,
Rhian
