BRIEF: It’s no use being coy about this. Our Artisan Bespoke is based quite clearly on The Vi-Spring Chatsworth (£3.200 Kingsize – John Lewis). We state quite openly that our Artisan Bespoke is “The best mattress your money can buy”. .. And the following is our proof. ..

The cynical ones amongst you will no doubt question how on earth can we produce this mattress to be retailed at around £1480 LESS [Kingsize] than The Chatsworth? And quite right too. This is exactly what you should be doing.

To present our case, our Artisan Bespoke is described and detailed to the extreme in order to give you all the initial information you need to make an educated and informed comparison between the two.

COMPARISON DETAILS: The John Lewis Chatsworth has the following specification:

[Official JL Description] ” Vi-Spring’s Chatsworth mattress provides a superb night’s rest, thanks to its pocketed springs and high-quality natural fillings.

Bamboo fibres are combined with Platinum Certified British wool, horsehair, cotton and luxurious cashmere and a layer containing 1720 supportive pocketed springs.

The top is upholstered in silky bamboo blend fabric, finished with wool tufts and 3 rows of hand side stitching. Exclusive to John Lewis. “

Our Artisan Bespoke has 1850 gsm MORE Upholstery than the Vi Spring Chatsworth:
Our Artisan Bespoke has a combined upholstery weight of 5100 gsm (Outlined below) compared to 3250 gsm on the John Lewis Vi Spring Chatsworth. As an indicator of what this means, the Vi Spring Magnificence has a combined upholstery weight of 3710 gsm.

SPRINGS: There is absolutely no question of the provenance and quality of the spring unit we use. 1360 Pocket Springs (in a kingsize) Obviously calico encased and stitched pockets. Hand nested and hand formed. This is directly comparable to the spring unit used by Savoir Beds in at least two of their models.

This is the heart of our mattress and of course you can have it made with a choice of three tensions suitable for your bodyweight – Soft 1.40mm / Medium 1.52 mm / Firm 1.60mm

DUAL TENSIONS:
We can also accommodate people of differing bodyweights.  In this instance we can have your mattress made with Dual Tension springs e.g: Half the mattress with SOFT springs and half the mattress with MEDIUM springs. Likewise, Half Medium and Half Firm.

All models are side zoned with two rows of firm [1.60] springs to aid edge support

FIRST LAYER: 1000 gsm White Cashmere.
The first layer utilises White Cashmere needled on to a hessian backing. This provides a supportive but also flexible insulator between the spring unit and the forthcoming upholstery.

SECOND LAYER: 1200 gsm Horsehair.
Sitting on top of the cashmere we hand lay an upholstery layer of Horsetail and horsehair. Horsehair is known to be the ultimate in mattress upholstery acting as millions of tiny springs that works in perfect harmony with the main springs below but also cushions the subsequent layers.

THIRD LAYER: 1200 gsm Fine Horsetail.
A further layer of softer horsetail now creating progressively softer layers from the springs upwards.

A waxed 100% cotton calico sheet is then added to prevent the hairs migrating upwards.

FOURTH LAYER: 1200 gsm – Blended Wool and Cotton:
This is a blended wool (50%) and cotton (50%) layer. Similar to the wool and cotton blend as used by Vi-Spring (although their breakdown on composite blend is never given) .

FIFTH LAYER: 500 gsm 100% Pure Wool.
This is the final primary layer directly beneath the mattress fabric. Couple this to the preceding layer (Wool and Cotton) creates the ultimate in mattress comfort.

GSM: Primary layers total a massive 5100 gsm. This is on BOTH SIDES.

TURN: This s a full two sided mattress.

DETAILING: Three rows GENUINE hand side stitching. Side panel depth 9″ between the seams but the undulations caused by the mounds of wadding brings the total depth to about 11 – 12″ (28cm approx).

Eight padded turning handles (on a KS). Air Vents.

With edge support in mind, we have left our perimeter edging on – Vi-Spring removes theirs for reasons known only to themselves – people do (rightly or wrongly) sit on the edge and the more that can be done to support the edges the better.

The mattress has been traditionally hand tufted with woolen tufts.

FABRIC: A white jacquard 60%Viscose and 40% Cotton Damask.

BASE: Matching base is 12″ depth plus 2″ for Shepherd Castors. The base has been built to a higher than average spec [Firm Edge similar to Harrison's True Edge bases] ‘completely covered’ in matching fabric and will always come with sprung edge [1000 pocket springs - KS Equiv] as standard.

The base is in split into two sections [top to bottom].

SUMMARY: We have placed our reputation firmly and squarely on the line here by giving you a direct price comparison to The Chatsworth, a high end mattress from Vi-Spring, a manufacturer of worth, retailing for around £3200 (Kingsize) from John Lewis equally, one of the UK’s most respected retailers.

We say that our Artisan Bespoke is significantly better for quality of build [our mattress has 1850 GSM more filling than this particular Vi Spring model] In addition our retail price is significantly less.

To do this we had to be entirely sure that our mattress is not only comparable but actually supersedes The Chatsworth. It must be understood that this is not a direct copy. Our Artisan Bespoke uses considerably more of the same core premium ingredients – horsehair, horsetail and Cashmere, wool and cotton – at weights and composition that fundamentally creates a superbly comfortable “alternative” but for around half the price.

There are of course some minor differences. The spring count can be seen as the obvious one – Vi-Spring uses 1720 – We use 1360. This difference relates to the actual spring diameter hence Vi-Spring being able to get more in. Are 360 more springs worth an extra £1000 or so ? We don’t think so.

As further evidence of the quality of our spring unit – we equate the quality of our calico encased springs to Savoir Beds [The UK's premium mattress manufacturer and direct competitor to Vi-Spring]

The blended wool and cotton layer Vi-Spring uses for the primary comfort layer in their models is the key to this mattress. We openly state that this is a 50/50 mix. This could be identical to Vi Spring or their mix could be of different ratios – Vi Spring do not disclose this info. When we compare them side to side we see no significant difference. They use 900 GSM we use 1200 GSM.

Ryan and I have bought Vi-Springs, cut them open and dissected, analysed and discussed every single component. We are completely baffled as to where a £3200 price tag can be ethically justified.

As a final testament to the quality of this mattress, all you have to do to see if there is anything better out there, is go to any retailer armed with the information above [component and weights] and see what your money can get you.

Finally. This is a Bespoke model. By adjusting the spring tensions and  adjusting current layers we can make the mattress firmer or softer to suit your exact requirements without costing you any more. This can also be manufactured as special sizes for just 10% more per six inch increments.
